My Yaoi Graphic Novels ~ Adults Only
[Some of my yaoi graphic novels... be warned these are gay love stories with sex !!!]

Definitions [Wikipedia]:
  • Yaoi ~ Male/Male relationships. Boys Love books created for women as opposed to gay manga for men, usually show sex scenes.
  • Seme and Uke ~ There's usually a definate top and bottom in yaoi and the terms Seme and Uke refer to this respectively.
  • Shōnen-ai ~ Male/Male relationships, more romantic than sexy.

Read it out loud if it doesn't make sense  :0)

NB: I am a member of the free to join UK website Read It Swap It and have some
yaoi books listed that I'd like to swap along with a wishlist if anyone's interested.

Some General Notes
... Usually, translated yaoi mangas follow the 'native' format and read from right to left, you know, back to front, in honour of the original Japanese books :o) Yaoi Press reads the usual western way which annoyed me no end after I'd just gotton use to doing it the 'correct' way! *lol*
... When buying yaoi make sure you check that it's the graphic manga comics and not a yaoi novel with no illustrations, unless that's what you want. I've bought a couple of the novels and haven't been impressed, overall they feel rushed and are often very small as well as been too short which is a shame.
... My favourite releases are often from Juné Manga, part of it is their presentation, their books are a nice size, larger than average - apparently approx. 7 x 10in. while the industry standard is around 5 x 7in. They have great full colour dust covers and are just nicely laid out in general, they also have a lot of artists/authors with great artwork.
... Yaoi Press release less polished, standard sized books though still good quality, and often the artwork isn’t to my taste, but there are still a few that caught my eye mostly because the stories sounded interesting, like Cain - “You insolent fool! As if brutal massacres and torture weren’t enough for you ! Now to top it all off… your lack of reserve would put the devil to shame”, and Stallion [wild west, pretty characters despite the rough setting and adult story line], also Saihôshi the Guardian [v. 1 has a preview of Stallion in the back], which was better, artwork wise, than I expected, so I‘m not ruling out their future releases. I was a little disappointed by the Cain artwork, but I’m sticking with it as it’s only 3 volumes and I want to see what happens.

... BLU, Kitty Media, TOKYOPOP, 801 Media releases are all about the same size as Yaoi Press books, though 801 Media do nice full colour dust covers and a few colour plates [illustrations] similar to Juné Manga's style.

Favourites [in no particular order]:

[ Yellow ] [  Pet on Duty ] [ Wild Rock ]  [ Gorgeous Carat ] [ I Can't Stop Loving You ] [ FAKE ] [ Skyscrapers of OZ ] [ Our Kingdom ]

Yellow: Four [4] volumes all available to buy, you can buy a box set of this series as well. Lovely artwork, interesting story and a great relationship between the two main characters. One of my first and favourite sets. It's nice to have a good story involving adults, even if they're young adults at 22 as a lot of yaoi novels seem to focus on 15-19 year olds who are still at school or have just left. I love both Goh and Taki and how they interact as their relationship and the trust between them grows, yes there are kissing and sex scenes. The Juné Manga books look great and I wish I'd know about the box set as I would've bought it to protect the 4 volumes instead of the individual books. Yellow is the first yaoi series I've seen that offers a box set, more publishers should do it, it's a nice idea, but of course they'd have to let us know it's an option on release of the first volume, and we'd have to be patient enough to wait! Oh, and Goh isn't feminine, but he is gay and longs to open that box of delights for Taki! Now see, in this series there's pouncing, Gorgeous Carat characters should take note! *lol*

Amazon Synopsis:
Straight and macho Taki partners with feminine and gay Goh to form an expert team of bandits hired by the police to steal from the mafia. Lately, Goh has been more interested in acquiring Taki's feelings than the usual caches of arms and drugs. Will Taki and Goh form a new kind of partnership? Volume one of Yellow begins with a brewing personal interest between Taki and Goh, though Taki is still unwilling to answer to Goh's desires. A gangster's jealousy leads to Taki's kidnapping, and it's up to Goh's cunning and charms to save him. Working solo, it's also up to Goh to find the drugs he was hired to steal while sidestepping a police conspiracy powder keg.

Pet on Duty: A one off yaoi. Mizuki, and isn’t that a popular name in the genre, is 18 years old and through no fault of his own has lost his job and apartment. He’s adopted and feels that he shouldn’t burden his aunt and uncle, “I can’t rely on them anymore. A High School graduate shouldn’t be mooching”, and instead ask his older brother/cousin for a place to stay until he can find another job. Unfortunately his Nii-san lives in a company dorm, no visitors or pets allowed and he has to sneak Mizuki in and keep him hidden. That’s when the fun starts. Everyone immediately takes to cute Mizuki, except Toru Kudou, who’s far too serious for his own good and has a secret of his own. There are a few misunderstandings, “If you’re going to be a pet… Stay in the corner and be quiet”, “What an asshole…”, but after a rocky start a sweet relationship develops. Nothing too graphic, some hugging and kissing and a few attempts at sex that are mostly interrupted by the other housemates, damn it! *lol*  Lovely artwork by Nase Yamato, who I wish had more manga available, I’m thinking of getting ’Cigarette Kisses’ [2008]  and I managed to get a scanlation of ‘Saa koi ni Ochitamae’, [3 volumes with the last one ongoing at Forever More], as I’m now a fan even if her characters do have a similar look, I don’t care because they’re so well done and likeable. An enjoyable read if you don’t mind the occasional cell where Mizuki looks far too young [but incredibly cute], a common occurrence in yaoi *sigh*  There’s a page ‘About the Author’ that has a great little drawing of the artist and I like the way they do the info in yaoi mangas, “I currently have no hobbies, and I’m becoming a pathetic person.”  :o)  Pet on Duty is a Boysenberry standard size release with a nice colour cover, through no dust jacket, and a colour plate inside along with a preview of ‘Sex Friend’ by Koreaki Kamuro, [which I won’t buy as I’m not keen on the pointy faces].

Boysenberry Books Synopsis:
Mizuki has just lost his job. Without money or a place to live, Mizuki has no choice but to stay with his older brother in his company dorm room. Since non-employees are not allowed in the dorm, Mizuki must live there in secret, like a house cat. At first Mizuki is intimidated by his older brother's roommate, Toru, but seeing a softer side of Toru changes his opinion. Toru starts to treat Mizuki with kindness, but Mizuki wants to become more than just a pet companion.

Wild Rock: A one off prehistoric romance! Love it, great artwork, nice love story with some action scenes, angst and a couple of nice little side stories as well as a bonus at the end which is amusing. Published by BLU the books are the same size as those by Yaoi Press with thick rough pages, but I like them and the clean style of artwork. Emba, the seme, is hot, Yuuen, the uke, very pretty and a failed hunter, but tries hard and isn’t as useless as I may be making him seem! He’s a good foil for the dark Emba and both are chieftains’ sons, heirs to their clans. There’s kissing and sex scenes, but overall it’s more romantic than graphic. BLU also did some of the Gorgeous Carat books.

Amazon’s synopsis: A one-shot volume, "Wild Rock" is set in a fantastic version of pre-history. It presents the tale of Emba and Yuuen's relationship, as the two very different heirs to warring clans meet and fall in love with each other. The volume also includes two side stories, one featuring the respective clan leaders in their younger days (and their own tempestuous relationship), and the other featuring Yuuen and Emba's niece, the adorable little Nava.

Gorgeous Carat: There are four [4] books in the first arc, Virtue of Darkness, and the story is continued in Gorgeous Carat: Galaxy published by Juné Manga, and while the smaller BLU publications are nice, the Juné Manga seems more luxurious. Great artwork, engaging story if you like action and it's set in Paris to begin with, in the early 1900s. Nothing graphic sex wise but an interesting relationship between Florian and Ray/Noir, the two main characters who are 20 and 18 years old respectively. The blurb on the back of v. 1 describes the story as a swashbuckling adventure and you just know Noir has led a hell of a life. It really surprised me that he didn't just pounce on Florian the way he obsesses about him! I would have liked some pouncing, I'm all for the pouncing! The author/artist You Higuri has made Florian the slightly more girly of the two appearance wise, Florian is a beautiful blonde, but he's tougher than he looks [just as well what with the abuse he has to put up with!], and you get the feeling that maybe Ray/Noir wants a partner rather than a servant/slave relationship with Florian, but isn't quite sure how to achieve that, probably because he has enormous trust and control issues :o) He wants to possess and protect Florian, one thing I can say for sure, if they were to move forward with their relationship, Ray/Noir would want Florian to be the uke, "One day I'll make those arrogant violet eyes succumb to me." However, Florian might have something to say about that. "Sorry, but I don't listen to orders from low class swine." Of course, as he's saying this Florian reminds me of one of Charlie's Angels about to flip his hair back with one hand, but hey, it works for me, pounce Ray pounce! *lol* Both men are my favourite characters in Gorgeous Carat and I'd love more books in the series, but have no idea if it'll go beyond the current 5 volumes.

Amazon Synopsis: "The volume starts off with Florian and his mother in a bit of a spot as their once rich aristocrat family has fallen into poverty. The family was entrusted with the Flame of Mughal, a 120 carat diamond. This diamond also, however, is said to be cursed and to bring misfortune to those who seek it. A distant member of the family, Ray (Noir) meets Florian at a family party and is instantly enchanted by Florian's amethyst eyes. A usurer, he convinces Florian's mother to trade in her son to salvage some of her pride."

I Can’t Stop  Loving You:
I love this series, lots of sex and attempts at sex within a loving committed relationship that's developed from a childhood friendship, funny, and sweet too, and great artwork. The uke, Yu, is obsessive but beautiful with it as well as freakishly strong, “You’re so skinny. Where the hell does your strength come from?”, and Kyouji, who's pretty good looking himself, would do anything for him. It’s nice to see a forceful, possessive uke for a change :o)  There are some lovely romantic and sweet moments throughout the books, “I don’t want you because you’re useful. I wanted to be strong so I could protect you… We can’t even fool around because I keep injuring you.” And interesting supernatural plots - Yu can see ghosts and Kyouji is a Buddhist monk in training who can exorcise them. The characters are still at school but there's talk of taking prep courses for college admission so they're probably around 18 years old. It's a Kitty Media release. a smaller size book like Yaoi Press, 801 Media and BLU mangas, two [2] volumes with a third to come, I think, so and hopefully more from Row Takakura soon. I'd have to say that Yu is my favourite character, [he desperately wants to be pounced *lol*], but only just as Kyouji is lovely too!

Amazon.com Synopsis: Kyouji is a Buddhist exorcist, although he can't see ghosts his best friend and lover, Yu, can! Maybe they'd go all the way if Yu's incredible supernatural strength could be held in check. How can a steamy, sexy relationship survive such obstacles?

Fake: One of my first and still a favourite! I saw the ova at Veoh before I knew about the Yaoi graphic novels, [apparently there’s a FAKE cd too], mostly set in New York, interesting stories throughout the 7 volumes and Dee is a great character… well, Ryo his love interest is too, but Dee’s my favourite and he’s always trying to pounce on Ryo, which is probably why! *lol*  The men are detectives, the Dee is kinda work shy which frustrates newbie Ryo as he ends up with all the paperwork, but even so he’s still drawn to the other man. Ryo is as skittish as a virgin in a wh*re house and has no previous experience with men, something Dee is very keen to remedy and there are some romantic, sweet and funny moments. "Has anyone told you you have an unbelievably beautiful face? It's hard to restrain myself being so close to you."  Comments Dee while taking care of a sick Ryo, not that it gets him very far! "What the hell are you thinking?! For the love of god, I'm sick and defenceless dammit!!" "Don't worry. I'm not going to attack you. I do have some morality. [Aside: Dang, he's on to me.]"  :o) There’s some kissing and the occasional light sex scene as the series moves on and the men’s relationship grows, but nothing over the top even with the pouncing! It’s basically shonen-ai romance until the last volume when the yaoi hits. Published by TOKYOPOP the book is very slightly larger than a Yaoi Press or 801 Media release, sturdy and with decent artwork overall. It’s fun too and you'll probably want them all once you start!

Don’t you like women Dee?
Mmmm, of course I do. But she’s gotta be perfect. Not too fat or too skinny. And a mega babe, too. Oh, and preferably over 18. Oh,  and she’s got to be the equivalent of me in hotness.
So you do like girls!
[ASIDE: “So that kiss was a joke after all. Whew.
And since you’re asking on the guy side it’s you.
And just who the hell was asking that?

My favourite quote about Dee by Ryo, “I’ve seen whores with more shame than you. You horny ape!!

TOKYOPOP Synopsis: Ryo's and Dee's first investigation together centers around a street punk named Bikky who's up to no good. When Dee and Bikky are kidnapped, it's up to Ryo to come to their rescue and save the day. Afterwards, Dee reveals that his feelings for Ryo run much deeper than friendship, but Ryo isn't exactly receptive to his overtures. In fact, he's not sure what to think or where to turn! Before long, their attention is diverted by a young pickpocket named Carol who needs protection from a group of gangsters who want her dead. As the authoritative officers do everything in their power to protect her, their bond grows stronger and stronger. Soon, it's impossible to ignore the electrified emotions that are brewing between them. Could this be love?!

Skyscrapers of OZ: A one off [as far as I know], standard size Kitty Media release with art by Row Takakura, who created another of my favourites, 'I Can’t Stop Loving You'. Skyscrapers of OZ is based on Yoshino Somei’s novel and is a kind of detective story with lots of action and cute young men. Great artwork overall, lots of sex scenes and you’re treated to one committed relationship and a new romance! Both of which I enjoyed. Friends and work partners Mari Kudoh and Yoichi Oonishi, both 25,  are ‘handymen’ for hire, “The two of you should just become detectives or something. It’s the same work anyway, right?” “A detective can investigate affairs, but he can’t walk someone’s dog… or clean the apartment of a single babe. It’s better to offer one stop shopping. Not limit yourself to one task. There’s more demand for what we do.” The partners also have a more dangerous and secret ‘back-door’ operation on the side. Yoichi is in a relationship with Mari’s pretty younger brother Miyuki, [who’s still at school so between 15-18 years old], “… I don’t remember making you a gift of my only brother!” “Yeah but I’ve already had him…” “And I’ve already been had…” Poor Mari keeps walking in on the couple having sex which is quite funny, but it’s only when through Miyuki he meets Yu Kaito that he’s own prospects of a love life start looking up, however, there’s a snag, it turns out that Yu is the target of one of OZ’s ‘back-door’ jobs!

Amazon Synopsis: From tailing your lover to walking your dog, no job is too small! Mari and his partner Yoichi are drop-dead gorgeous "Handymen." But they also have a hidden (and dangerous) other side. Their latest job is, of all things, to sleep with Yu, a beautiful male student! But instead Mari finds himself rescuing Yu from an attack, then sheltering him in his own apartment!

Our Kingdom: There are at least five [5] volumes in this series. Nice artwork and interesting story about two young men supposedly competing for a fortune, however, the aloof, manipulative and highly intelligent Rei is the real heir and all he's interested in is Akira. Can Akira overcome his insecurities and other obstacles to stay by Rei's side? Nice side story between Rei's clueless bodyguard and the Takatou family's private secretary who is overseeing the so called competition.

Amazon Synopsis: Upon the death of his grandmother, country boy Akira Nonaka is taken in by the immensely wealthy and powerful Takatou family. To this simple boy's surprise, he is told of his candidacy to become heir of the Takatou name. However, the princely and handsome Rei, is also a likely contender. Far from being competitive, Rei shows no interest in the prospect of inheritance, and instead takes an immediate liking to Akira. Rei's aggressive showings of affection bewilder the naive country boy, until Akira begins to discover a budding attraction towards Rei within himself.

Some Book Notes
... I liked Love is Like a Hurricane’s first two volumes, though you have to suspend disbelief and let it go that Mizuki didn't defend himself when molested on a train, which is how he finds out that Azuma’s interested in him! There's lots of sex scenes between the overwhelmed uke Mizuki who is cute and feisty, and the determined seme Azuma. The characters are the same age and in High School, which in Japan is 15-18 years old so that's probably the age span over the 5 volumes we know about so far, and there’s also some good side stories. v. 3 put me off a bit because of what happens to Mizuki at the start and Azuma's attitude, as well as the side effects of the event, especially as in general I prefer older characters, but I’m sticking with it as I like passionate committed love stories and I think Azuma just wanted to show Mizuki he loves him no matter what.  This series is published by 801 Media.
... Saihoshi The Guardian 2 volumes, a good story with some nice artwork and a funny bonus. Self absorbed Prince Anel makes his servant and lover Kaleth act as his decoy on a dangerous journey, devastated by this betrayal Kaleth takes his anger out on the Guardian Sastre who is sworn to protect the Prince, but has no idea Kaleth has been forced into the deception.  Despite the young decoy's dislike of him, Leave me alone! First you drag me into this… then you expect me to stay locked up in that bloody coach forever. No way! which is fuelled by the knowledge that Prince Anel desires the Guardian, Sastre finds himself distracted by Kaleth when he should be concentrating on his duty.
... Necratoholic is a story of vampires and vampire hunters, forbidden love, not as good as I'd hoped, but still worth a read and has decent enough artwork.
... Kissing is a nice story of childhood friends, when Kazushi confesses his love there's some angst, new discoveries and growing up to be done by Haru who is completely thrown by the idea of his best friend being in love with him.
... Two men out for vengeance get in each others way in Stallion a wild west adventure. A partnership of equals in the end with pretty characters and nice artwork, Stallion and Josey have to find a way to work together not only to bring down the criminal Bill who has done terrible things to them both, but also to save each other.
... Sensitive Pornograph comprises of 6 short, short stories  by Ashika Sakura, check out the ova [original video animation] at Veoh. An 801 Media release with a nice colour dust cover and colour plate inside and good artwork. The stories are passionate and interesting except for ‘Please, Kiss Me’ where the a poor lad keeps getting beat up! ‘Non-Adult Situations’ is cute, “I don’t care if you’re a guy! I love you! I can’t even get turned on if it isn’t with you! Damn it!” “Lets do it, you idiot!” Beware, there’s gratuitous use of exclamation marks, I know, shocking! *lol*  In the ‘Afterword’ Sakura says, “This is the second volume in the Pierce Series”, but I don’t know anything about that, so something for you to look up!  :o)
